Welcome to my

LARGE Family Website

May Magee Large and William Francis Large circa 1910

Welcome to my family history website. This website will focus on the surname LARGE and my related family lines of LAGAN/LOGAN, MAGEE, KAVANAGH, BOWE, TRACY, JOYCE, REILLY, and KELLY.

The LARGE surname is derived from the French large and largesse, meaning generous (MacLysaght, The Surnames of Ireland).  The LARGE family originated in France, and spread to England and Ireland (and to other countries in Europe) in two major migrations. After 1060, members of the LARGE families emigrated from Normandy to England and Ireland.  Later, during the persecution of the Huguenots in the 1500's and 1600's in France, many Protestant French LARGE family members fled to Ireland, England, and elsewhere.  Members of the LARGE family served in the British army and navy. Robert Large, a mercer, served as Mayor of London in 1439. Descendants of Irish LARGE families settled in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and elsewhere in Canada, as well as in the United States.
